What influences our commitment to the environment? Researchers have used the psychological concept of ‘commitment’, normally used to understand relationships between people, to investigate our relationship with the environment. The results indicate that an individual’s commitment to the environment is important in their ecological behaviour, for example, their willingness to use public transport and make sacrifices for the environment. Study calls for triclosan to be restricted A new review of the anti-microbial substance triclosan argues that past risk assessments have underestimated its toxicity to aquatic organisms. New data from Germany suggest that aquatic organisms are frequently overexposed to damaging levels of triclosan in waterways, and the researchers suggest it could be restricted under EU legislation. New method for estimating the energy consumption of rainwater Simple life cycle analyses of rainwater harvesting systems may underestimate their energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 60%, according to research, which has used an improved method to estimate systems’ energy use more accurately.
